John Michael Carter was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of sixteen, he began his first studies in drawing. In 1968, he attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. In 1970, Carter moved to the Los Angeles area where he attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Two years later he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Carter has traveled throughout the United States and Europe, which has been the inspiration for many of his paintings. John Michael aims to capture his feelings from a new location, believing that first impressions are important. “When I am painting,” says John Michael Carter, “I choose subjects that are part of my everyday experience. I enjoy painting the scenes around my home or members of my family.” John Michael Carter recreates memories through his paintings of still lifes, landscapes and portraits with a palette and brush stroke uniquely his own.
John Michael Carter’s portraits include university presidents, governors, and senators as well as corporate leaders. Since 1975, he has had 27 solo exhibits and has participated in many group exhibitions and national competitions. His paintings hang in the collections of many museums and corporations.
